With two wins on Tuesday at the 3A Wesco District 1 Tournament, the Mountlake Terrace Hawks find themselves in the tourney championship game on Thursday and are ensured a spot in the state tournament to be played on May 24-25.
The Hawks beat Marysville Pilchuck in the opening game of districts 6-4, then upset the Shorecrest Scots in the second game 4-3. Terrace will take on the Meadowdale Mavericks for the district championship Thursday at 6 p.m. at Phil Johnson Fields in Everett. The championship game will be broadcast live on the Hawk Live Sports Network on MLTnews.com.
In the Hawks opening game Tuesday, a first inning two-run homer by junior Maddy Kristjanson gave Terrace an early lead. Marysville Pilchuck got a run in the fourth inning off a Jordan Nicholson homer.
The Hawks loaded the bases in the sixth inning off three straight singles by Hannah Fickle, Kristjanson and Hannah Baisch. Senior Rene Bos picked up an RBI base-on-balls, then Kelsey Watson slapped a two-run single to put Terrace ahead 5-2.
The Tomahawks pulled within one run in their half of the sixth when Haley Fritz blasted a two-run homer, closing the gap to 5-4.
Terrace picked up an insurance run in the seventh when Hannah Wilcox scored on a Fickle double. Fickle ended the game going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a single, an RBI and scoring twice.
Bos picked up the win on the mound, then 15 minutes later started for the Hawks in their second match-up of the day, a district semifinal against Shorecrest. The Scots had entered the game as the number-two seed from the Wesco South Division and a record of 15-5, but with timely hitting and some stellar defensive play, the Hawks were able to come away with the win.
Shorecrest took an early lead off a two-run homer over the left field fence by Amanda Hartley in the first inning. The Hawks scored a run of their own in the second off a Hannah Wilcox RBI single.
Terrace strung some hits together in the third inning to take over the lead. Kristjanson and Baisch led off with a pair of singles, then scored on a single by Watson and a throwing error by the Scot infield. Watson later scored off an RBI single by sophomore Sammy Harter.
Shorecrest pulled to within 4-3 in the fifth inning after a throwing error by Bos put the Scots’ Carly Anderson on first, who later scored on a Jeanna Berg double.
Kristjanson came in to pitch in relief with one out in the sixth inning and recorded two strikeouts to end a Scot threat. Then in the seventh inning a superb Hawk double play choked out any hopes the Scots had of coming back for a victory. Junior Amanda Aversano made a running catch of a fly ball to center field, then with a strong throw doubled off Anderson from first base.
The Hawks had entered the district tourney as the number-four seed from the 3A Wesco South Division, but grabbed victories over the number-one North seed, Marysville Pilchuck, and the number-two South seed, Shorecrest.
The number-one South seed, Meadowdale, enters the district championship game with a season record of 21-2 after their two victories on Tuesday, a 7-2 defeat of Oak Harbor and a 5-3 win over Glacier Peak.
