On a back-and-forth night, it was the Shorewood T-Birds that finally prevailed over Mountlake Terrace in a tense dual meet that came down to the last match of the night. Shorewood’s Branden Kalloway pinned Hawk Shawn Poole to give the T-Birds a hard fought 42-36 victory over Terrace Thursday at Mountlake Terrace High School.
The final match showdown was only made possible by a shocking turn of events in the previous match when Terrace’s Kevin Massey pinned the T-Birds’ Dawfa Dibba with five seconds left after trailing in points the entire match.
The dual meet was an emotional roller coaster ride for everyone in attendance, even Hawk’s head coach Kanoe Vierra. “It was probably one of the most exciting matches that I think I have had in my coaching career here,” Vierra said.
In the Massey-Dibba matchup, a miscue by the fatigued Dibba in the final seconds set up the surprising win for Massey. “He just countered a mistake that the Shorewood wrestler made,” Vierra said. “That’s all he did, he just countered it and put him on his back.”
“We keep telling the kids that if they work and if they continue to work good things are going to happen,” Vierra added. “It may not be right off the bat; it may be in the last minute, maybe in the last 20 seconds, maybe in the last ten seconds, but if you work hard things are going to open up so that you can get that lead.”
The pin gave Terrace a shot at a team victory over a Shorewood squad that includes state-ranked talent, but the Hawks just came up short.
In the meet, MTHS picked up four individual victories by pinfalls — by Massey, Taylor Hetherington, Syd Springberg and Kaleb Davis.
The Hawks travel to Bainbridge Island on Saturday for the Island Classic meet before returning to Wesco action and their final home meet of the year on Thursday, Jan. 17. The Senior Night meet versus Meadowdale begins at 7 p.m.
