After a long first day at the WIAA 3A State Girls Softball Championships that started Friday with a 9 a.m. game and didn’t conclude until the final out of their third game sometime after 8:30 p.m., it took less than two hours on Saturday for the Mountlake Terrace Hawks to be knocked out of the state tournament as they fell to the Bainbridge Spartans 14-7.
The Hawks end the 2013 season with a 15-12 record and sharing seventh place in the state with Wesco League rival Shorecrest.
Despite another 9 a.m. start, both Terrace and Bainbridge came out swinging in their loser-out match-up on Saturday. The Hawks scored three runs in the top of the first off of Spartan starting pitcher Katie Raben, but Bainbridge pushed across four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. By the third the Spartans had built a 10-5 lead and would not be caught by the Hawks.
Rene Bos, pitching her third game in about 19 hours, took the loss. Raben picked up the win on the mound for Bainbridge, and had a big day at the plate; the Spartans went two-for-four with a home run and seven RBI.
Hawk Hannah Wilcox continued her hot hitting at the state tournament by going three-for-four from the plate including a home run, her fourth of the weekend. Terrace picked up 11 hits in the game, but couldn’t keep up with the 17 that the Spartans pounded out.
Kamiakin successfully defended their 2012 state championship by beating Prairie 12-7 in Saturday afternoon’s final; the Falcons, who defeated Terrace in first round play, was the tournament’s runner-up. Wesco League champion Meadowdale finished third.

I commend the Hawks for getting to State. They played their best all season and can be proud of their efforts. Congratulation to the seniors and “go Hawks” as the rest of the team builds for next year.
