Hawks drop season football opener to Stanwood, 19-8

By Doug Petrowski

The newly-installed Hawk offense moved the ball at times but struggled to get into the end zone against Stanwood Friday night, as Mountlake Terrace lost to the Spartans 19-8.

The Hawks racked up 282 yards of total offense, 191 on the ground; junior Devante Downs rushed for 108 yards on 18 carries. Senior quarterback Beau Kennedy had carries for 78 yards and completed nine of 19 passes for 91 yards.

The only Hawk points were scored on a Downs nine-yard touchdown run and subsequent two-point conversion with 41 seconds remaining in the game.

The Hawk offense couldn’t capitalize on any early scoring chances. On their last drive of the first half, time ran out with Mountlake Terrace on Stanwood’s one-yard line.

The 0-1 Hawks face Edmonds-Woodway next Friday at 5 p.m. at Edmonds Stadium, 7600-212th St. S.W.
