In a back-and-forth, five-set marathon, the Mountlake Terrace girls volleyball team ended up on the losing end at Shorewood High School against the T-Birds Tuesday night, 3-2 (22-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-27, 15-7). It was the first lost of the season for the Hawks.

Mountlake Terrace (6-1) overcame three match points in the fourth game to get to a deciding fifth. Shorewood (5-2) had leads of 24-22, 24-23 and 25-24, but in each case couldn’t score a winning tally. The Hawks finished off the fourth game with three straight points, but couldn’t carry that momentum over into the fifth game, where they fell behind 8-1 and never recovered.

The Hawks won the first game 25-22 and were leading halfway through the second before the T-Birds mounted a big charge to win 25-23. Solid digs by Shorewood freshman Delany Hopen and big kills by 5’ 6” senior Taryn Miyaoka led the Shorewood comeback.

The Hawks have a week to lick their wounds before their next match on Tuesday, Oct. 2, at home against Meadowdale. Their chance to avenge the loss to Shorewood comes up on Thursday, Oct. 11, when they will face the T-Birds again.
