With support from both the Edmonds School District and the Mountlake Terrace City Council, the roadway that encircles Mountlake Terrace High School will receive the honorary name of “Hawk Way” at a dedication ceremony in September.
The roadway isn’t an actually city street, but a driveway on the property of the high school, so the name change can be done with little effort or consequence by the city. The public works department will be removing the street sign labeling the driveway as 217th Street SW and replacing in with a sign marking it as “Hawk Way.”
The 217th Street sign was scheduled to be replaced soon, along with all the other street signs in Mountlake Terrace, due to a 2011 federal mandate requiring street signs to have improved reflectivity, an increased font size and uniform standards.
The dedication ceremony for renaming the roadway to “Hawk Way” is set for Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 9 a.m.
