Yes, the Mountlake Terrace High School Hawk has apparently flown the coop.
The MTHS Hawk mascot costume is missing and has not been seen since mid-October. Senior Bailey Bane, who dons the suit at assemblies and sporting events, had the costume with him at the Oct. 13 Edmonds School District “Celebrate Schools” event at the Alderwood Mall. He told the Hawkeye, the MTHS student newspaper, that he put the costume in his car but that was the last time he saw it.
With the costume missing, the Hawk mascot was noticeably absent from the final three Mountlake Terrace football games of the season.
School officials don’t seem to have much faith that the costume will migrate back home anytime soon; MTHS Athletic Director Kim Stewart believes it was stolen. “It’s a sad story,” he said, “but in a way the guy did us a favor. That thing was getting a little nasty.”
After weeks of researching catalogs and the Internet, a suitable replacement costume was found, purchased and is on its way, Stewart said. The athletic director is hoping to get some help from either a local charitable organization or the school’s sports booster club in paying for the new $1,200 costume.
It’s unknown if the new Hawk suit will arrive in time for the MTHS boys basketball season opener on Tuesday at Edmonds-Woodway High School. The Hawks play the Warriors at 7:15 p.m., a game that can be seen on the Hawks Live Sports Network via MLTnews beginning at 7:05 p.m.
