The Mountlake Terrace High School girls track team put together one of its better team efforts of the season on Friday at the Edmonds School District championship meet, finishing second in the four-team competition. The Hawks scored 158 points, second only to the 198 points collected by Edmonds Woodway.
Freshman Chinne Okoronkwo continued her dazzling season as she won three field events easily: the pole vault, the long jump and the triple jump. Sophomore McKeena Hunt brought home a victory in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.10, her best of the season. Junior Barbara Biney recorded her best time of the year in the 200 meter — 27.25 — good enough for second in the event on Friday. Junior Jessy Smith picked up a second in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4-8.
Two other platform finishes for the Hawks were Ella Schroth, a third place in the 1600 meters, and Katherine Walter, a third place in the 3200 meters.
On the boys’ side, the Hawks finished third with a score of 128 points. Picking up a victory for Terrace was senior Gifton Okoronkwo in the triple jump; teammate Tye Esparza finished second in the event. Okoronkwo also picked up a second place finish in the long jump with Blake Fernandez placing third.
Other Hawk notables were Esparza placing second in the high jump, Beau Kennedy grabbing second in the javelin, Quinnell Mason finishing second in both the 200 meters and the 400 meters, Duane Dahl placing second in the 100 meters, Yohans Tewolde grabbing third place in the 800 meters, and Brett Potter earning third in the discus.
The two-day Wesco 3A Conference championships begin Wednesday, May 8, and will conclude on Friday, May 10, at Shoreline Stadium. Terrace athletes will be there competing in hopes of qualifying for the 3A District 1 meet the following week in Marysville.
