A special outreach performance by Hawaiian music troupe HAPA will happen later this month, thanks to a partnership between Edmonds Center for the Arts (ECA) and Edmonds Senior Center.

This interactive performance will take place at Edmonds Senior Center, located at 220 Railroad Ave., on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 11 a.m. The show is open to community members of all ages.

HAPA just celebrated its 30th anniversary. Like the islands themselves, HAPA’s music is an amalgam of influences ranging from ancient Polynesian rhythms and genealogical chants, to the strummed ballads of Portuguese fisherman and Mexican cowboys, to the inspired melodies and harmonies of traditional church choirs of the early missionaries.

Add a dose of American acoustic folk/rock and you have what has been described as the “most exciting and beautiful contemporary Hawaiian music the world knows!” by the Maui Times.

Guitarist Barry Flanagan has been the guiding force of HAPA since its beginnings in 1983. Joined by singer, Hawaiian chanter and multi-instrumentalist Kapono Nā‘ili‘ili; Tarvin Makia on bass; and hula dancer Radasha Ho’ohuli, Flanagan will discuss the origins of HAPA’s unique sound.

The band will perform a few of their most beloved songs, followed by a Q-and-A session with the artists.

RSVP in person at Edmonds Senior Center or by calling 425-774-5555.

HAPA will also perform at Edmonds Center for the Arts, located at 410 4th Ave. N., on Feb. 27 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $24, $29 or $34. Click here to buy tickets online or call the ECA Box Office at 425-275-9595.
