Edmonds firefighters will hold an opening ceremony for the Edmonds 9/11 Memorial Park, located outside Fire Station 17 at 275 6th Ave. N. in downtown Edmonds, at 9:11 a.m. this Friday, Sept. 11.
According to firefighter Dave “Bronco” Erickson, who has been spearheading fundraising efforts for the memorial, firefighters of IAFF Local 1828 received a building permit from the City of Edmonds a few weeks ago “and have been working quickly to complete the Memorial prior to 9/11/15.”
The centerpiece of the memorial will be a one-ton steel I-beam recovered from the World Trade Center in New York City — Ground Zero for the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. “We have several new stainless steel and glass structures to honor the nearly 3,000 people killed during the terrorist attack, including 434 firefighters and 60 police officers,” Erickson said. “We will also retain our local Fallen Firefighter Sculpture, which honors our firefighters that have died in the line of duty as well as our Fallen Firefighter Flagpole which flies at half-staff for three days for each firefighter killed in the line of duty across America.”
The ceremony will feature the Snohomish County Fire District 1 Honor Guard with presentation of colors as well as “Amazing Grace” on bagpipes, “Taps” by Officer Debbie Dawson of the Edmonds Police Department and dedication and commentary by local dignitaries. The public is invited to attend.
