Good showing for MTHS cross-country runners at state championships

Mountlake Terrace High School runners Jack Pierce and Ella Schroth had good showings at the WIAA 3A State Cross Country Championships Saturday in Pasco, with Pierce finishing 38th out of 175 state qualifiers and Schroth crossing the line 51st out of 170 competitors.

Pierce, a junior, and Schroth, a freshman, were the only members of the Hawk cross country teams to qualify for the state meet. Pierce finished the 5,000-meter course with a time of 16:28.6, while Schroth timed in at 20:03.1.

In the girls competition, the meet favorite, Amy-Eloise Neale of Glacier Peak, easily outdistanced the field with a time of 17:03.6. Katie Knight of North Central finished second at 17:44.7, while Katie Bianchini of Glacier Peak placed third at 17:58.2. Glacier Peak won the girls team title, crushing the field with 66 points. Kamiakin placed second with 141 points, Peninsula was third with 142 points.

On the boys side, Joe Hardy of Seattle Prep took home the individual title with a time of 15;18.4. Finishing second was John Dressel of Mt. Spokane at 15:31.1, and Tanner Anderson of North Central placed third at 15:34.8. North Central of Spokane won the boys team title with 38 points, Kamiakin placed second with 75 points, and Nathan Hale was third with 91 points.

The championships were held at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco under almost ideal conditions of clear skies and temperatures near 60.
