Gallery: Mountlake Terrace Elementary kindergartners receive new coats

Fire District 1 firefighters spent their Wednesday morning at Mountlake Terrace Elementary distributing new jackets to kindergartners.

It’s part of a program called Operation Warm, which provides brand new, American-made coats to kids in local schools.

At Mountlake Terrace Elementary, every kindergarten student received a new coat, whether they needed them or not, so the event feels inclusive. Fifty-four coats were distributed at Mountlake Terrace Elementary on Wednesday.

The kids were excited to get out of the classroom for about an hour to get their new coats. Then, they got to try them out in the rain for a group photo.

Fire District 1 firefighters have distributed about 400 coats since beginning Operation Warm a few years ago.

The give-away is made possible by donations from the public and events held at local businesses, like a Dining 4 Dollars event held at Red Onion Burgers in September that raised $2,500. To donate to the program, visit

  1. I think it is so great that all the kids got coats. It doesn’t single out kids with low income or make the other kids on barely making it income feel left out. I’d happily contribute to such a project and will try to find where to donate.
