Mountlake Terrace track was well represented Saturday as school athletes competed at three different meets in Kirkland, Shoreline and Marysville, with a number of Hawks grabbing first place finishes.
At the Lake Washington Invitational in Kirkland, Hawk freshman Chinne Okoronko placed first in the triple jump with her best effort of the year, and the best by any high school girl in the state this season, a mark of 39-6.75. Okoronko also finished second in the pole vault with a mark of 11-3.
The meet drew girls from 47 schools around the state, with Terrace finishing 15th in the team competition.
Many of the Terrace boys were at the Shoreline Invitational, a meet drawing athletes from 53 schools. Hawk senior Gifton Okoronko placed fifth in the triple jump at 43-8. Senior Duane Dahl qualified for the finals of the 100 meters, finishing eighth with a time of 11.54 seconds.
At the Tomahawk Classic in Marysville, MTHS track team members won two events. Senior Blake Fernandez finished first in the triple jump with a mark of 41-4.5, his best of the year. Senior Beau Kennedy took the top spot in the javelin with his best effort of the season, a toss of 171-3.
Hawk freshman Hailee Malins had two notable finishes in Marysville, a fifth in the shot put with a mark of 33-1, and a fifth in the discuss with her best effort of the year, a toss of 95-3.
The Hawks begin postseason championship competition this week, with the Wesco Freshman and JV Championships set for Tuesday, April 30, at Snohomish’s Veterans Memorial Stadium beginning at 3:30 p.m. The Edmonds District Meet, featuring the teams from MTHS, Lynnwood, Meadowdale and Edmonds-Woodway High Schools, is scheduled for Friday, May 3, at Edmonds Stadium; start time is 4 p.m.
