The Mountlake Terrace High School girls cross country team, and every other girls’ team in the state, have been chasing the defending state champions Glacier Peak all season. But for one Hawk on Saturday, it was Glacier Peak that was chasing her.
Hawk freshman Katherine Gustafson won the girls individual title at the 3A Wesco League Championships held Saturday at South Whidbey High School. Her time of 19:09.02 over the 5,000 meter course topped the field and helped Terrace claim second place in the team competition.
Glacier Peak won the team title by placing four runners in the top 10.
In addition to Gustafson’s performance, the Hawks finished with two more runners in the top 10: freshman Sophia Nelson placed third with a time of 19:23, and sophomore Ella Schroth grabbed ninth place with a time of 19:56.
On the boys side, Terrace finished in third place behind meet winner Shorewood and runner-up Glacier Peak. Senior Hawk Jack Pearce ran to a third place individual finish with a time of 16:23.3; he was joined in the top 10 by fellow seniors Peter Kidane, who placed seventh with a time of 16:53.4, and Wyatt Allemann, who placed tenth with a time of 17:03.5.
A listing of all finishers and times at the Wesco championships can be found here.
Both the MTHS girls and boys squads move on to the 3A District 1 Cross Country Championships Saturday, Nov. 2 at Lakewood High School. Top finishers at that event will qualify for WIAA Cross Country State Championships the following weekend in Pasco.
