Following a high-flying 4 win-no-loss start to the 2013 season, the Mountlake Terrace High School girls soccer team was brought back down to earth on Tuesday by the Shorecrest Scots 4-0 at Shoreline Stadium.

The Hawks had only given up two goals in their first four games, but some sloppy defensive play gave the Scots numerous scoring opportunities that they were able to convert.

“Shorecrest matches up against us very well with a strong and fast and physical style of play,” Hawk Head Coach Evan Hatch said. “So I think they exposed the areas we need to work on going forward from here.”

Scot Hailey Wicken scored just before halftime, slipping a shot past Terrace goalkeeper Amanda Aversano into the lower left corner after Hawk defenders were unable to stop a high bouncing ball at the top of the 18-yard box. Wicken added a second goal just eight minutes into the second half off a Shorecrest throw-in deep in Hawk territory.

With Terrace pressing to create some offensive pressure in the second half, the Scots would hold the Hawks at bay and then mount effective counter-attacks. Shorecrest scored halfway through the second half when Aversano couldn’t reach a far post cross off a corner kick that Scot Kayla Holland was able to head in for a goal. Then in the 76th minute the Scots added a fourth goal by Sophia Viviano; the breakaway scoring opportunity opened up when Hawk central defender Maddy Kristjanson, after trying to score herself, got tangled up with a Scot defender, went down hard, and was unable to get back into the play.

Despite the loss, Hatch was still upbeat after the match. “It’s hard to lose like that but you have to be positive about it in order to improve going forward from here,” he said.

“We’re still 4-1; you gotta smile,” he added.

The defeat drops MTHS (2-1-0 in league play, 4-1-0 overall) into a first-place tie with Meadowdale. Next up for the Hawks will be a home match against Marysville-Getchell on Thursday, Sept. 26, at Lynnwood High School. First kick is set for 7:30 p.m.
