Four people were injured, one seriously, in an early-morning accident Monday on I-5 in Mountlake Terrace not far from where a Bremerton man was killed in a collision just a week before.

The Washington State Patrol reported that around 3:30 a.m., a 2003 Chevy Malibu in the HOV lane of northbound I-5 just south of 220th Street Southwest swerved left and struck a 2005 Chevy pickup truck on the freeway shoulder; the truck was stopped as it was assisting a state sweeper vehicle working on that stretch of I-5.

The driver of the Malibu, a 20-year-old Everett man, was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where he was listed in serious condition. The driver of the truck, a 45-year-old Snohomish man, was not seriously injured.

Two passengers in the Malibu sustained minor injuries; a 21-year-old Marysville man was transported to Harborview, treated and released, while a 17-year-old Marysville male was taken to Swedish/Edmonds Hospital for treatment.

The state sweeper vehicle was not involved in the collision.

Traffic on northbound I-5 in the area of the incident was slowed for four hours as the state patrol had the HOV lane closed during an investigation of the collision. The investigation was finished and all lanes of the freeway were open for traffic at approximately 7:35 a.m.

The accident came seven days after all lanes of northbound I-5 through Mountlake Terrace were closed for more than eight hours during the overnight hours of Feb. 16-17 as emergency personnel responded to a fatal collision involving a car and a tanker truck.

Magarbi Matthew, 22 of Bremerton, died when the vehicle he was driving lost control and struck the tanker; the tanker’s trailer flipped onto its side onto Matthew’s car.
