Former Hawk John Allen leads Western to NCAA D-II basketball title Saturday

Former Mountlake Terrace Hawk John Allen led Western Washington University to the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship Saturday. Allen was the team’s top scorer with 14 points as the Vikings beat Montevallo of Alabama 72-65 in Highland Heights, Kentucky.

Allen graduated from Mountlake Terrace High School in 2008 and earned second-team all-Western Conference selection as a junior after the 2006-2007 season (He did not play as a senior.) Allen redshirted the 2008-2009 season as a walk-on at Washington State University in Pullman and played 13 games for Coach Ken Bone there in 2009-2010. Allen then transferred to Bellingham and has played two seasons for the Vikings.

The 6-1 junior guard started 25 of the team’s 26 regular season games this season and is ranked among the best free-throw shooters in the nation. Allen’s four free throws in the final 49 seconds of Saturday’s championship game sealed the victory for WWU.
