After two consecutive regular seasons without a singles’ match defeat, the dream of a senior year without a loss for Mountlake Terrace’s Tina Liu ended on the first day of the season.
Liu loss her first match of the year 6-3, 6-3 to Marysville-Getchell Charger Marina Ciferri Wednesday at Mountlake Terrace High School. Ciferri, a senior, qualified for the 3A Girls State Tennis Tournament last year and is expected to contend for a spot at this spring’s state championship tourney.
As a team, the Hawks fell to the Chargers 4-3 with the only Terrace victories by singles’ player Brianna Tran and the doubles’ teams of Jennifer Tran / Stefiana Roesli and Nina Berry / Ryan Berry.
In other Terrace action on Wednesday, the Hawk baseball team couldn’t hold an early 4-0 lead over the visiting Snohomish Panthers, ultimately succumbing 11-4 in eight innings. Five Terrace errors helped the Panthers to the extra-inning victory.
Hawk senior Alex Hussey went 2-for-2 from the plate with a home run and a walk in the defeat.
