Edmonds School District technology levy on the ballot this February

Edmonds_School_DistrictVoters living within the Edmonds School District will consider a replacement technology/capital improvements levy during the special election season. The measure will appear on the Feb. 9, 2016 ballot.

Ballots were mailed to military voters on Friday, Jan. 8 and will be sent to all other eligible voters on Thursday, Jan. 21. You can see a sample ballot here.

You can learn more on the Edmonds School District levy webpage.

The four-year, $59-million measure will replace the 2012 voter-approved measure that is expiring in 2016.

The replacement levy collection averages $14.75 million per year for each of the four years, 2016 through 2019. The levy would authorize the school district to replace a levy that expires this year. The imposed property tax would be between 56 and 59 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value.

For each $100,000 of assessed value, the cost is estimated to be $59 annually, or for a home assessed at $400,000, the cost is estimated to be $236 annually. The money would go to new technology and building system improvements.

If you need to register to vote before the special election, you must do so in person at the Snohomish County Elections office, located at 3000 Rockefeller Ave. in Everett. The deadline to register by mail or online has passed.

The Edmonds School District serves the cities of Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace and Edmonds, as well as portions of Brier and unincorporated Snohomish County.

  1. Twenty percent of this levy (11.7 of 59 million) is for turf field replacement or construction.

Given that the district has gone to great lengths to defend the choice to use crumb rubber on our children’s athletic fields, including…

    * Lack of serious serious consideration given to parents and concerned residents with respect to the use of crumb rubber at Edmonds Campus (Former Woodway) and Edmonds-Woodway High School

    * Threatening to sue the City of Edmonds for passing a ban on crumb rubber

    * Rejecting a “possible” offer to fund the cost of a non-toxic alternative infill

    * Hiring a consultant to review 32 (hand selected) articles to defend turf safety

one can only assume the district plans to use crumb rubber on subsequent fields. I cannot support a levy that will fund crumb rubber turf fields, that I am not comfortable having my child play on.

No Tax Dollars for TOXIC TURF!

    Vote “NO” on Prop. #1
