Members of the community are invited to attend a ribbon-cutting celebration at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, to mark the City of Edmonds’ completion of the “missing link” of roadway on 228th Street from Highway 99 to 76th Avenue West.
The $7.83-million 228th Street Southwest Corridor project — the largest capital improvement project in Edmonds in more than 15 years — provides another route for commuters to travel between Edmonds and Mountlake Terrace, with connections to the Mountlake Terrace Transit Center and Interstate 5. It also aims to improve pedestrian, cyclist and traffic safety. Construction began in June 2015.
“We are thrilled to announce the completion of this project,” said City of Edmonds Public Works Director Phil Williams. “I wish to thank our crews, who did a tremendous job in delivering this huge project on time and on budget.”
According to Williams, the 228th Street project “will greatly increase safety margins for all modes of travel at the difficult intersection at 76th Avenue West and SR 99 by eliminating dangerous turning movements at that location.” The project will provide two new signalized intersections on 228th Street Southwest at both Highway 99 and 76th Avenue West, providing a safe way for pedestrians to cross at those intersection.
The finished project includes:
— Extending the center median on Highway 99 to restrict the southbound left turn from 76th Avenue West to Highway 99.
— Providing a safer left turn at the new signalized intersection at Highway 99 and 228th Street Southwest, with protected left turn phasing for northbound and southbound movements.
— Adding a traffic signal at 228th Street and 76th Avenue.
— Adding bike lanes, sidewalks and lighting on both sides of 228th Street.
— Adding storm water detention vaults, infiltration galleries, and bio-swale within the project limits to improve drainage, as well as water and sewer upgrades.
In addition, thanks to a partnership between the cities of Edmonds and Mountlake Terrace, the project included completion of a pavement overlay that involved rebuilding part of Lakeview Drive in Mountlake Terrace.
