Fourteen percent of Edmonds School District families who responded to a district survey in August reported that their students don’t have home access to a computer for schoolwork. The number is even higher for Spanish-speaking families, with 45 percent reporting no home computers for their students.
To assist these families, the district reported in its weekly newsletter that it is working with the Edmonds Public Schools Foundation to help secure low-cost computers and Internet access. Through a program with Comcast, the Foundation will offer an Internet Essentials package for $9.95 a month plus tax to families who qualify for free and reduced school lunch.
District families interested in learning if they are eligible should visit InternetEssentials.com or call 1-855-8-INTERNET (1-855-846-8376). More information about free computer use will be made available in October.
A total of 4,812 families out of 13,261 called participated in the survey, for a 36.29 percent total response rate. Details about these programs will be sent to over 2,000 District families who through the survey expressed interest in low-cost or free computers for student learning at home.
