Edmonds School District Voc Ed Class

Edmonds Vocational Education instructors and students held an open house in Bothell, Washington on June 9, 2011 to showcase the home that they planned and built this past school year. The program is a thirty-six year partnership between the Edmonds School District and Lynnwood Rotary Club.

Each year a house is planned and constructed by students from Lynnwood, Meadowdale, Edmonds/Woodway, Scriber Lake and Mountlake Terrace High Schools. This year’s house is located at 214 159th St, SE., Bothell, Washington, with an appraised value of $369,000. Each year the proceeds from the house project are reinvested to financially support the program in perpetuity.

Local dignitaries on hand for the event were Edmonds School District Superintendent Nick Brossoit, Edmonds Public Schools Foundation Chair Debbie Bodal, Edmonds School District Director of Career and Technical Education Mark Madison, Rotary District 5030 Assistant Governor Stan Miner, Lynnwood Rotary President Andrew Ballard, and Lynnwood Rotary Foundation Chair Travis Snider.

Three students were introduced as standouts of the program by their instructor, Scott Hammond and teaching assistant, Micah Burlingame. Jacob Settlemyer, a drafting class graduate of Edmonds/Woodway High School who spent his entire summer drawing up the architectural plans for the project, Dakota Farmer, a carpentry student at Lynnwood High who showed exceptional aptitude towards the planning and building of the structure, and Lina Kadmiri, a student at Edmonds/Woodway High School who planned the interior design of the house.

The building construction program offers students an opportunity to learn entry-level carpentry skills such as blueprint reading, estimating, zoning and building codes, job site development, forming, pouring and finishing concrete, wall and roof framing, siding, interior finishing, roofing, and teamwork.
