The Edmonds School District Board swore in and welcomed its newest Director during its regular meeting Tuesday, May 13. April Nowak is an Edmonds resident with four children; three currently in the Edmonds School District.

“On behalf of the Board of Directors and the Edmonds School District community, we welcome April to her new role and appreciate the extensive knowledge in policy issues and budgeting she brings to the position,” said School Board President Diana White.

Nowak’s children attend both Meadowdale High and workshops at Edmonds Heights K-12. They were at the board meeting to witness the swearing in that took place at the start of the meeting.

“My 16 years as an Edmonds resident and 12 years as a parent in the Edmonds School District gives me firsthand knowledge of how the District operates and the needs of the population it serves,” Nowak said. “My passion for service and education is what led me to run and be elected as student body president of Oregon State University and to be appointed to the Oregon State Board of Higher Education.

“I now want to serve the students, families and staff of the District in a meaningful and thoughtful manner,” she added.

Nowak has a diverse background in management and development, including program manager with The Boeing Company when she first relocated to the Puget Sound region. She currently serves on the board of directors of a local non-profit and homeschools two of her children.

Nowak was appointed to fill director position No. 4, left vacant by the resignation of former School Board President Susan Phillips to support her husband through a health issue. She was one of six candidates who applied for the position.

Nowak will serve until the next regularly scheduled School Board election in November 2015. The person elected in November 2015 would need to run for a full, four-year term in November 2017.
