Mountlake Terrace senior Devante Downs ended all speculation on where he will play college football Thursday when he announced on Twitter that he will be heading to Berkeley to become a University of California Golden Bear.

“Just committed to play and get my education at Cal, blessed for the opportunity and can’t wait to be there #BearRaid14,” Downs tweeted on Aug. 15.

Downs was heavily recruited by numerous Pac-12 schools in addition to a few others nationwide. It was thought that he would wait until after this upcoming season with the Mountlake Terrace Hawks to make a commitment to a college program, but a recent injury that will keep him off the football field this year may have changed that plan. Downs tore an ACL in June at a football camp in Oregon.

Judging from comments to Cal Bear fan websites, initial response to the announcement of Downs coming to Berkeley was overwhelmingly positive. “Looks like another great kid and player! Go Bears!” and “Welcome to Cal Devante!” were just a couple of comments on www.CaliforniaGoldenBlogs.com .

Devante is expected to finish his senior academic year at Terrace early then enroll at Cal in January 2014. This would enable him to take part in the football program’s spring practices in preparation for the 2014-2015 school year.
