The cold-shooting Mountlake Terrace Hawks were held to their second-lowest points total for the season and fell to the Stanwood Spartans, 47-43, in the 3A Northwest District Boys Basketball Championship Saturday night at Jackson High School.

Between Stanwood’s tough 2-3 zone and a Spartan front line that included two big men, 6-10 senior Drew Sears and 6-8 junior Drew Stang, the Hawks found points in the paint difficult to find. Terrace did hit three long-range three-pointer in the first quarter – two from Greg Bowman and one from Marquis Armstead – but the team couldn’t find enough outside shooting to stay with the Spartans.

Mountlake Terrace (20-3) led only once in the game at 9-8 following Armstead’s three-point jumper with 3:15 to go in the first quarter.

Despite their shooting woes, the Hawks had chances in the fourth quarter to perhaps steal the victory. Trailing by three, 41-38, Bowman missed on a three-pointer with 3:20 remaining. Then with 1:30 left in the game an Armstead’s drive to the hoop was swatted away by Stanwood’s Sears.

The Spartan’s Mason Garcea sealed the victory for Stanwood by going four-for-four from the free throw line in the game’s final 30 seconds.

Armstead led the Hawks in scoring with 13 points; Bowman finished with 10 points, eight in the first quarter. The Spartans were led by the 17 points of Josh Thayer.

Despite the loss, Mountlake Terrace will play in a Region IV game next Saturday at 4 p.m. at Glacier Peak High School against the winner of the Kennedy Catholic (17-6)-Foss (17-6) match-up to be played on Tuesday night. With a victory on Saturday, the Hawks would return to the 3A State Tournament in the Tacoma Dome for the second season in a row. Stanwood (18-5) will play Franklin (16-9) directly following the Mountlake Terrace game on Saturday for a spot at the state tourney.

The third-place team in the district tournament, Glacier Peak (19-5), will match-up in a winner-to-state regional game against the state’s top ranked 3A team, Rainier Beach (21-4), at Bellevue College on Saturday.

The 3A State Boys Basketball Tournament at the Tacoma Dome is scheduled to begin on Thursday, Feb. 28.

The Mountlake Terrace Region IV game on Saturday will be broadcast live on the Hawks Live Sports Network on starting at 3:45 p.m.
