City begins installation of new LED street lights

Work to install new LED street light fixtures throughout Mountlake Terrace has begun; the new lights are expected to save the city $22,000 along with over 277,708 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, city officials report.

In August 2012, the city’s Public Works Department was awarded a State Department of Commerce Grant for $79,500 to retrofit approximately 250 existing city-owned streetlights to new LED fixtures. This grant, combined with incentives from Snohomish County PUD and Street Capital Improvement Funds, established a total budget of $240,000 for the project.

Fixture costs, in addition to installation bids accepted in December, were below original cost estimates. The project was expanded to retrofit an additional 100 street lights owned by Snohomish County PUD in Mountlake Terrace.

Sail Electric, Inc. of Bellingham was awarded the installation contract.

  1. I love seeing this!  Lower electricity and maintenance costs, so the city can spend that money on other worthwhile projects. Better light quality. Instant-on, no flickering or re-strikes.
