Child Drowns in Bathtub

Some sad news today, The Herald reports that late on Tuesday evening a toddler drowned in a bathtub in Mountlake Terrace:

Police and paramedics were unable to save a child after he accidentally drowned in a bathtub late Tuesday.

An 18-month-old boy with serious medical problems slipped under water while his mother was attempting to feed him through a tube, Mountlake Terrace police Sgt. Doug Hansen said.

Someone called 911 around 10:30 p.m. and emergency crews rushed to the home in the 24200 block of 56th Street SW, Hansen said.

The Snohomish County Medical Examiner is expected to conduct an autopsy.

  1. Truly sad, for sure… but I'm confused. Confused by a few things actually. First, why was the mother feeding the child in the bathtub?? Second, if the mother was there feeding the child, how did the child drown? Wouldn't the mother, upon seeing her child slip under water, immediately retrieve said child from the water so as to prevent the child from drowning?Something is seriously missing from the mother's story here…

  2. I was originally going to say something along the lines of, “… fed in a bathtub?” but I don't know the whole story, plus, the quoted article DOES mention the 18 month old had serious medical problems.maybe the bathtub was the only place the child was comfortable enough to eat? or to take the tube?either way, quite sad indeed.
