Cedar Plaza owner responds to Retrofit closure

The owner of Cedar Plaza, John Stipek, has posted this notice on the doors of Retrofit, which abruptly closed its doors last week. There will be a meeting for Retrofit members that will take place on Tuesday, March 30, at 7 pm at Retrofit.

We regret that the use of Retrofit’s facilities are no longer available for you use. We have ALL suffered a loss by Retrofit’s closure and inability to fulfill their legal obligations.

We will continue to work and support the local Mountlake Terrace and Brier communities. We will try to find a new tenant to own and operate an excersize facility at Cedar Plaza.

John K. Stipek will conduct a meeting, for Retrofit’s members only, to discuss the situation.

  1. This is too bad for the current members… I don’t know why they closed but I had a feeling that they were going to go under eventually and found the club to be a huge disappointment so as soon as my year contract was up, i switched to 24 hour fitness. Even though my contract was up and followed my end of the agreement by providing a months notice in writing, they continued to bill my card until I finally had to cancel my Visa and fight them for a refund.

So, even though this is a pain for members, I hope it will be a good thing.

Seems like it’s be a great spot for a 24 Hour Fitness club – they have a small one in North Seattle about the same size.

In the mean time, people looking to switch might check out the Alderwood 24 Hour Fitness… I’ve found it to be amazing and super affordable. $30 a month, no joining fee and NO CONTRACT!

    1. I didn’t think Retrofit had year contracts. As far as I knew it was all first months dues, last months dues, and either a membership or processing fee. So that’s weird. I’d do a boot camp workout instead like the ones offered in Snohomish County.

      1. They required one year contracts when I joined… I’ve been with 24 for just almost a year now, so maybe Retrofit had changed to keep up with the competition after I left?

  2. Seattle Tae Kwon Do the neighbor to Retrofit is offering a special offer to Retrofit members of a 50% discount on any Thai Kickboxing Program. We only have 30 spots for this amazing offer, that GETS RESULTS and is fun. Call 525-775-0299 for details.

  3. I also paid only month to month and I’ve learned that 24 hour fitness asks only for payment month by month. I liked the convenience of having Retrofit just minutes from my house. I find it odd that Cedar Plaza is slowly losing more tenants, (liquor store, rock it music) all of which I used. I think the owner of Cedar Plaza should rethink his profit margins in this down economy. I don’t feel like utilizing any of the shops there anymore. I don’t think John Stipek is a good neighbor and should not be supported. If I use 24 hour fitness, the shops on Ballinger will get my business because I am there. I often tied other shopping in with my work out.

  4. That space must be expensive. who was there first? That one mexican restaurant…years ago…when I first moved to this area. 5 years ago I think.
