Cedar Way Elementary in Mountlake Terrace is once again up for a $50,000 grant through the Pepsi Refresh Challenge.
Cedar Way has been working for the past six years raising money to replace an old, out of date and barely safe playground. But with budget cutbacks and recession pressures, it has been difficult to raise the necessary funds to purchase expensive playground equipment. In May 2010 the school competed actively in the Pepsi Refresh challenge but failed to make the top 10 in order to win a grant. CWE hopes to build upon that experience and try again to win in November.
The school, parents and community are motivated to create a better play and community space at the school. “Some of the playground equipment has been there since 1959!” says Hawkins Cramer, Principal of Cedar Way Elementary. “Our kids deserve more from us. They’ve proven themselves capable of great things through hard work and making good decisions during difficult times – It would be a huge boost to give them the playground they deserve.”
