The start of the school year means that many students will be bicycling or skateboarding to school.
Fire District 1 notes that properly fitted helmets are highly effective in preventing head injuries. Bicycle riders with helmets have an 85 percent reduction in their risk of head injury and an 88 percent reduction in their risk of brain injury.
Bicycle and universal multi-use helmets (for bicycling, skating and skateboarding) are available for a small donation at all fire stations in the Fire District 1 service area, including Brier and Mountlake Terrace.
Suggested donation is $7 for bicycle helmet and $10 for universal helmet. Suggested donations cover helmet costs. Helmets are available between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. whenever firefighters are in quarters. Firefighters may be unavailable if responding to emergency calls.
The Brier Fire Station 18 is located at 21206 Poplar Way in Brier and the Mountlake Terrace Fire Station 19 is located at 5902 232nd St. SW. in Mountlake Terrace.
