After pushing across nine runs on Tuesday, the Mountlake Terrace High School baseball team upped their scoring output to 12 runs on Wednesday; but in this case it wasn’t enough as the Glacier Peak Grizzlies exploded for 16 runs and a 16-12 win over Terrace in eight innings.
The high-scoring affair concluded only after an extra inning of play that produced six runs between the two squads. The teams were tied at 11-11 at the end of regulation; Glacier Peak scored five runs in the top of the eighth, too much of a cushion for the Hawks to overcome in their half of the frame.
Down 11-7, Terrace scored four runs in the sixth inning to draw even, then had a couple opportunities in the seventh inning to grab a walk-off win. With base runners on first and second with just one out, Drew Serres popped out. Then after both base runners advanced on a wild pitch, Jaden Yackley — batting .600 going into the game — grounded out to end the threat.
Glacier Peak pounded out 18 hits in the win, led by the four hits of Austin Hines, who went 4-for-5 with a double. Ryan Ober and Ray Rude each had three hits for the Grizzlies.
Hawk Jason Shevenko led the team in offense. going 4-for-5, with 4 runs scored including a double and an RBI.
The match-up was the second in a three-game series between the teams, which meet in the rubber game on Friday, April 4, at Glacier Peak High School. First pitch is at 4 p.m.
