Mountlake Terrace batted around early and late, scoring five runs in the first inning and seven in their fourth and final at-bat enroute to a 13-3 victory over Edmonds-Woodway. The Hawks had struggled to score in their first two games this season, but Tuesday, in soggy conditions, saw an end to that drought.
Jesse Prothero took the mound to start the game for MTHS and retired the first three Warriors in order. With one out in the home half, Jaden Yackley and Jason Shevanko got things going for the Hawks with a pair of singles. Dominic DeMiero then hit a screaming one-hopper that skidded off Warrior third baseman Marc Campaganaro into left, giving DeMeiro a double and RBI and sending Shevanko to third.
Campagnaro was attended to and would leave the game with a gash on his face. Warrior coach Dan Somoza had good news late Tuesday evening, saying Campagnaro had a bruised cheek and stitches on his nose, but doctors think he’ll be OK to return next week.
After a 10-minute delay for Campagnaro’s injury, play would resume and so would the Hawks’ offense. Daniel Theis and Wyatt Alleman both had RBI singles and Michael Hunt an RBI double in the gap. Terrace re-loaded the bases on a pair of walks, but starting pitcher Chantz Justice escaped further damage, retiring Yackley on a fly to center.
Mac McLachlan got things started in the second for E-W with a clean single to left and then Justice helped his cause with a double, putting two men in scoring position with no outs. Brandon Krohn, inserted for Campagnaro, followed with a rising line drive that was snared by the Hawks second baseman Yakley, who got Justice out for a double-play. Stoneman would follow with the first of his two hits, a double down the right field line, scoring McLachlan. Prothero struck out the next batter, ending the inning. Justice settled down in the second for E-W, yielding a one-out double to Demiero, but no runs.
In the Warrior third, Brady Edwards and Jason Smarr had consecutive singles and both were advanced one base following a successful sacrifice bunt by Joey Rees. Tate Budnick hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Edwards. The Hawks’ Prothero and second baseman Yackley then hooked up on a pick-off play at second, ending the Warriors’ inning, with E-W having closed the gap to 5-2.
Brett Stoneman took over pitching for the Warriors in the bottom of the third. Elliott Nebel greeting him with a single to left. After Stoneman retired the next two batters, Yackley doubled to deep left center, scoring Nebel. E-W catcher Budnick then caught Yackley attempting to steal third to finish the third inning with the Hawks now up 6-2.
Rayden Silva replaced Prothero in the top of the fourth, yielding a walk to the first batter he faced, McLachlan. McLachlan advanced to second on a fielder’s choice and one batter later scored on a single from Stoneman. Cameron Sharp then reached on an error, but Edwards sinking liner to right was caught by right fielder Michael Hunt, stranding the runners on the corners.
Shevanko started things off in the bottom of the fourth for MTHS with a solid double. DeMiero then switched places on second with him, with an RBI double. Following a fly-out to center, Alleman doubled to the left field fence, scoring Theis. The next two Hawks , Hunt and Nebel, walked. Austin Whitehouse came in to pitch for E-W, promptly striking out the first batter he faced. Allenman then scored on a balk, and after a walk re-loaded the bases, Yackley struck again, this time clearing the bases with an RBI double. That was followed by Shevanko’s third double of the night to score Yackley, giving the Hawks their 13th and final run. The game was called after the Warriors were down 10 after their half of the fifth.
After scoring only one run in their first two games, the Hawks offense came to life with all nine of their hitters reaching first base, including eight via base hit. The 2-3-4 hitters — Yackley, Shevanko and DeMiero — all had three hits, with DeMiero’s all being doubles and Yackely adding two doubles of his own. All told, the Hawks had 14 hits in their four innings of work. Mountlake Terrace improves to 1-2 on the season with their conference opener scheduled for tomorrow at Stanwood.

Brett Stoneman had two hits and two RBI to lead the Warriors, now 1-2. Next up for E-W is a 1 p.m. home game this Saturday against the always tough Thunderbirds from Shorewood. A replay of Tuesday’s game can be seen on The Sound Live Sports Network.
