Up 2-1 with two outs in the seventh inning, the Mountlake Terrace Hawks were one out away from giving Marysville-Pilchuck their first Wesco League baseball loss of the 2014 season. But after an error, the Tomahawks were given new life and were able to push across an unearned run to knot the game at 2-2.

After a scoreless eighth inning, the Tomahawks took control in the ninth by scoring five runs and going on to defeat Terrace 7-2 on Wednesday at Mountlake Terrace High School.

“We just made mistakes and gave them the opening,” said Hawk Coach Andrew Waters. “They’re too good a team to do that to, and they took advantage of it.”

Not being able to quickly get that third out of an inning crushed the Hawks in the ninth frame also as the Tomahawks scored all five runs with two outs. Landon Riker started the scoring with an RBI single, followed by an RBI double by Nick Anderson, then the final blow, a three-run double by Andrew Alvis.

Terrace went quietly in their half of the ninth inning, going 1-2-3 to end the game.

Despite the loss, Waters was pleased with the overall play of his team against one of Wesco’s top 3A squads. “We played well,” he said. “Dan Theis pitched really well; Dominic DeMiero pitched really well in relief.”

“We just needed to make those plays on defense. It just came down to that,” he concluded.

Terrace had the bats going early in the game and built a 2-0 lead by the end of the fifth inning. “I think they’re a good hitting team,” noted Tomahawks Coach Kurt Koshelnik. “We threw in our best guy against them, and they were competitive bats. You know what they are, they’re very aggressive. They swung first pitch a lot and they got after our guy. They’re a scrappy, aggressive team.”

The competition doesn’t get any easier for the Hawks as their next match-up is with the undefeated Shorewood T-Birds in a three-game series that begins on April 15.
