MTHS senior Trung Banh continued his hot start to the 2012-13 wrestling season, winning the 106 lb. weight class at the Edmonds Invitational on Saturday. Banh beat Meadowdale’s Mark Evanks in the finals 15-9 to take the title.
Hawk sophomore Taron Castleton made it to the final match in the 132 lb. class, but lost to Auburn’s Joey Santos. “I would have liked to have done a little better in the finals,” Castleton said, “but I was still really excited to take second place.”
Like Banh, Castleton is finding success early this year, with seven wins in 10 matches so far. The sophomore gained valuable experience with his run at the invitational tournament on Saturday. “It was my first finals match ever so I was a little nervous, but I hope to have plenty more in the future representing Terrace,” he proclaimed.
Coach Kanoe Vierra was pleased with the entire team’s performance on Saturday. “Of the 17 teams that participated in the tournament, we placed fifth with 126 points,” he said. “Not bad for just entering 10 wrestlers in a tough early season tournament.”
In addition to the outstanding results of Banh and Castleton, Syd Springberg placed third in the 170 lb. class, Tim Zuehl placed third in the 182 lb. class, Shawn Poole placed fifth in 160, Bret Potter placed fifth in 195, Forrest Clement placed fifth in 220, and Kaleb Davis placed fifth in the 285 lb. class.
In the team results, Edmonds-Woodway Purple came out on top with 202 points, with Auburn Mountainview finishing second and Meadowdale placing third.
