Arts of the Terrace winners announced

The Arts of the Terrace Artists’ Reception attracted over 140 artists and patrons Friday night as Friends of the Arts and the city’s Arts Advisory Commission celebrated their 36th year hosting this popular regional juried art show.

Awards for the show, which attracted over 370 entries, were presented for the best pieces selected from over 267 works that were juried into the show.

This year’s “Best of Show”, sponsored by the McMahan License Agency, was presented to Dick McMahon for a photograph entitled “Together”. Judith Lang received the Commissioners Choice Award for her painting, “Mountain Loop”.

Award winners in the Paintings, Prints, and Drawings category included Ekaterina Minkina for “Master Class with Derain” (1st Place), Rocky Barrick for “Letting Off Steam” (2nd Place), and William Houston for “Riding with Giants #2” (3rd Place).

Award winners for Photography were Dick McMahon for “Together” (1st Place), Michelle Jensen for “Edge of Day — Cape Kiwanda” (2nd Place), and John Armstrong for “Kitchen, Port Lockroy” (3rd Place).

Award winners for 3-Dimensional were Louise McDowell for “Inner Harmony and Balance” (1st Place), Carlos Acevedo for “Wired Stallion” (2nd Place), and Jon Schmidt for “Beginnings” (3rd Place).

Award winners for Artisan Works were Sam Scott for “Global Dimming III” (1st Place), Melissa Luna for “Structured Earth” (2nd Place) and Joe Wuts for “Bot Nest” (3rd Place).

Miniatures award winners were presented to Jane Mayer for “Best Dress” (1st Place), Janie Olsen for “Ares” (2nd Place) and Donna Jean Perry for “Lake Alta” (3rd Place).

Write On Calligraphers award winners were Nancy Anderson for “The Names of Jesus” and Suzie Beringer for “Raven”.

Merit Awards included Cody French for “Caledfwich”, Teresa Vatter for “Catch of the Day”, Diane Walker for“Mood Indigo”, Donna Jean Perry for “Paper Windows”, Patricia McNamee for “Woof”, Wendy Winkler for“Young Giraffe”, William Houston for “Riding with Giants #2” and Johnathan Lyman for “Summer Mountain Flowers”.

Honorable Mention Awards were received by Karen Leonard, Judith Lang, Susan McManamen, Steve Whitney, Robert Calkins, Tim Clifton, Patricia McNamee, Joe Wuts, Mike O’Day, Kathy Barker, Kellie Moeller and Cathy Shiovitz.

After the award ceremony, patrons and artists were treated to hors d’oeuvres as they enjoyed music by the Battista Brothers, Jerry and Jeff.

Located at the Mountlake Terrace Library (23300 58th Avenue W), Arts of the Terrace continues through Sunday, Oct. 5.

The Mountlake Terrace Friends of the Arts was recently awarded an $11,000 grant from the Hazel Miller Foundation to purchase new art exhibit panels. The new exhibit panels replaced the old white panels used for the past 25 years for the Arts of the Terrace Juried Art Show and allowed more space to add children’s art to the annual show. The new panels with top lighting greatly enhanced the show.

Arts of the Terrace is free and open to the public Monday through Thursday, Noon to 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, October 5, 1 to 3 p.m.

The “People’s Choice Award” and the “Children’s Choice Award” will be selected at the end of the show onOctober 5.
