Alderwood Terrace Rotary treats students in need to shopping spree

For 40 local students in need, back-to-school will be a bit brighter after a shopping spree sponsored by Alderwood Terrace Rotary Club. Staff at Lynnwood’s Spruce Elementary iand Mountlake Terrace Elementary each chose 20 students to receive a $100 wardrobe from JCPenney at Alderwood Mall.

Kim Williams, JCPenney store manager, also arranged for the students to get a haircut, photo and face painting during the early Sunday morning event. Each student was accompanied by a Rotary member or one of eight JCPenney department managers who volunteered to assist the Rotarians.

After shopping, each student was given a new, fully supplied backpack to start the school year.

Funds to pay for the $4,600 shopping spree were raised at the Alderwood Terrace Christmas Auction, and backpacks were donated by Lee Fitch, a club member. Additionally, some of the Rotarians covered the “must have” items that went over budget.

Alderwood Terrace Rotary Club meets Friday morning at 7 a.m. in the cafeteria at Swedish Edmonds Hospital.
