The Mountlake Terrace High School track team had mixed results the first day of the WIAA 2A/3A/4A State Track and Field Championships in Tacoma, as sophomore McKenna Hunt qualified for the finals of the 100 meter hurdles while the boys 4×400 relay team couldn’t keep up with the competition and finished out of finals consideration.
Hunt placed second in her heat of qualifying runs with a time of 15.56. She will line up against seven other qualifiers for the 100 meter hurdles finals at approximately 10:50 a.m. on Saturday. The favorite in the event is defending champion Cecelia Jackson of Holy Names Academy, who easily won the first heat of Thursday’s qualifiers with a time of 14.58.
Hawks Quinnell Mason, Yohans Tewolde, Joshua Kim and Duane Dahl struggled in the 4×400 relay Thursday and finished seventh in their qualifying heat. Their time of 3:33.80 was 14th among the 16 teams competing in the event.
The state championships continue at Mt. Tahoma High School on Friday beginning at 9 a.m.; competition concludes on Saturday.
Play begins at the WIAA 3A Girls Softball Championships Friday morning at 9 a.m. with the Mountlake Terrace Hawks taking on Prairie at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey. The game will be broadcast live via MLTnews.com. Also beginning on Friday is the WIAA 3A Girls Tennis Championships in Kennewick with the doubles team of Nicki Bouche and Tina Liu playing their first match at 8:30 a.m.
