Next week construction will begin on a missing link the the city’s sidewalk network. State budget cuts have forced the school district to discontinue bus service for students living within a mile of their school so this project comes at a much needed time.
Cedar Way Elementary school’s main access is on 39th Ave W but many kids walk to school and are walking from 44th, the main north-south road in the neighborhood. There is a walkway that connects 42nd Ave W to the school property so and it is well used. Students will walk from 44th east on 223rd, then south on 42nd for about a block to the walkway. Currently there are no sidewalks on 223rd (between 44th and 42nd) or 42th north of the walkway.
The project will provide approximately 580 feet of new sidewalks, including sidewalk ramps meeting ADA standards, on the south side of 223rd Street SW and on the west side of 42nd Place West between the traffic signal at 44th Avenue West and the walkway that connects to the Cedar Way Elementary School.
The preconstruction meeting was held last week and construction is scheduled to begin early next week and finish up by mid-November.
See the map below for the highlighted area where the new sidewalk will be.
