Mountlake Terrace didn’t go home empty-handed at Saturday’s Mat Classic XXVI.
Senior Syd Springberg took eighth-place in the Class 3A 182-pound division at the Tacoma Dome.
After losing his first-round match, Springberg responded with two straight pins before losing a 7-3 decision and then falling 12-4 to North Central’s Junior Villaro in the seventh-eighth place match.
“I was hoping that would go the other way,” Mountlake Terrace coach Grant Thompson said. “He has a lot of heart. He’s going to be fine. He’s a good kid.”
Mountlake Terrace will bring back three individuals who got their first taste of state competition – Taron Castleton (who won a match at 138), Daniil Oliferovskiy (152) and Hailee Malins (170).
“Three of them are back. That’s pretty exciting,” Thompson said. “There’s something about the dome. It’s kind of intimidating for those who have not been here before. Next year, they’ll know what they have to prepare for. I think they’ll be ready.”
