With three victories by pinfall, Mountlake Terrace High School junior Syd Springberg captured first place in the 170-lb. weight class at the Lynnwood Classic on Saturday, leading a Hawk team that placed six wrestlers in top five positions at the 14-school tournament.
“For the Mountlake Terrace wrestlers to place as high they did, with only eight wrestlers competing, is remarkable,” said coach Kanoe Vierra. The Hawks finished seventh in the team standings with 104 points; Cascade took home the team title, scoring 234 points.
Springberg pinned Jordan Forst of Roosevelt at 3:56 of the finals to win the 170-lb. title. “I felt that Syd wrestled hard and came into the tournament focused on performing well,” Vierra said. “Many of his moves were crisp and fluid in that he went from move to move without much effort on his part.”
Junior Brett Potter just missed out on winning the 195-lb. weight class title, losing in the finals to the state’s fifth-ranked wrestler in the weight, Ciaran Ball of Meadowdale. Potter’s loss placed him second in the weight class.
Other high-placing Hawks were Kaleb Davis (3rd place in the 285-lb. class), Shawn Poole (5th place in the 160-lb. class), Danil Oliferovskiy (5th place in the 138-lb. class) and Taron Castleton (5th place in the 132-lb. class).
