The Kroger Company, owner and operator of Fred Meyer and QFC grocery stores, has recalled several lots of frozen vegetables due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a pathogenic bacterium responsible for an estimated 1,600 illnesses and 260 deaths annually in the United States.
According to the company, the greatest risk is to those who are pregnant or have weakened immune systems. Symptoms are similar to those of the flu, including vomiting, fever, chills and severe headaches. Some cases also include gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and diarrhea.
Kroger has issued a recall notice identifying potentially affected products by UPC number. The company warns consumers to not eat these products and to return them to the store for a full refund.
