One year ago, the Mountlake Terrace High School girls soccer team finished their 2012 season with just four wins. What a difference a year makes.
The Hawks 2013 season came to an end Saturday with a 4-2 loss to the Marysville-Pilchuck Tomahawks in a winner-to-state, loser-out district tournament match at Shoreline Stadium. Terrace finished the year with a record of 12 wins, 7 losses and a tie.
“I’m really proud with how everybody worked really hard this year,” said first-year Hawk Head Coach Evan Hatch following the loss. “At the end of the day, we turned it around by such a large margin this year, we still can be proud of ourselves.”
The Tomahawks earned the final District 1 berth to the WIAA 3A State Girls Soccer Tournament. Other teams from District 1 going to state are the Meadowdale Mavericks and the Shorecrest Scots.
Though disappointed with missing out on going to the state championship tourney, Hatch sensed his squad felt some satisfaction with the season. “I’m proud, and I think the players are proud of themselves, of being a force to reckon with, a team to watch out for,” he said.
After two straight 3-0 victories in loser-out district matches, the Hawks just needed one more win to reach state, but ran into a big, strong Marysville-Pilchuck squad that would not be denied.
After an evenly matched first half – the teams were tied 1-1 at halftime – the Tomahawks were relentless with their second half offensive push. M-P’s Jessica Moskowitz just missed the upper right hand corner of the goal with a 25-yard free kick four minutes into the second half, but made up for it one minute later with a 35-yard free kick that slipped through the hands of Terrace goalkeeper Amanda Aversano for a goal.
Just two minutes later the Tomahawks picked up their third goal on the match when Brittany Anderson rolled a short shot under Aversano. M-P then pushed their lead to 4-1 with a goal by Mackinzie Nolte on a two-on-one breakaway in the 68th minute.
Hatch felt that the Tomahawks big front line was a major factor in match. “I think they have size and strength and they have energy, as much as anyone else in Wesco – North or South,” he explained. “They got a couple of goals, and then certainly started to just wear us down in their ability to score almost at will at times of the game.”
Mountlake Terrace’s Lily Hart picked up her second goal of the match during second half extra time when she volleyed in a short shot off an Allison Lorraine free kick to make the final score 4-2.
“Hats off to Pilchuck. They played much better than the last time we played them. They were a good team tonight,” Hatch concluded.
