Three local high school golfers to advance in state tourney play Thursday

WIAA golf logoSix high school golfers from Mountlake Terrace and Cedar Park Christian School — Mountlake Terrace teed it up on Wednesday in three state championships; three will be continuing play on Thursday while three will be coming home.

Matt and Mike Jenson, from MTHS, were part of the 74-golfer first-day field at the WIAA 3A Boys State Golf Championships being held at Tri Mountain Golf Course in Ridgefield. Matt scored an 80 and survived the cut to play the second round of the two-day tourney. Mike, who recorded an 85, missed the cut by three strokes.

After the first round, Spencer Tibbits of Fort Vancouver High School has a one-stroke lead over Spencer Long of Columbia River High School.

At the WIAA 1B/2B Boys State Golf Championships being held at Oakbrook Golf Course in Lakewood, Ben Reidy of Cedar Park Christian School — MLT is in a tie for third place after 18 holes. Reidy’s 80 sits him just two strokes off the lead held by Brendan McLeod of La Conner High School.

Cedar Park’s Aaron Gillis missed making the 20-golfer field for the second round of competition after posting a 95 on Wednesday.

Cedar Park also qualified two student athletes for the WIAA 1B/2B Girls State Golf Championships. Hannah Campbell will get a chance to play on the second day after shooting a 107 on Wednesday; teammate Lauren Gillis scored a 118 and missed the cut by three strokes.

Most of the 40 girls struggled on the tough Oakbrook layout, with only five golfers scoring below 100. The leader after the first round is Emily Baumgart of DeSales High School, whose 73 is not only 17 strokes better than her nearest competitor, but is five strokes better than the top boys’ score for the same opening 18 holes.
