When I was a kid, I and my 3 siblings took swimming lessons at the Mountlake Terrace pool. After our lessons my dad would always hit up the drive through of the Arctic Circle on 56th and we would all get ice cream cones. The building was built in 1967 but at some point the Arctic Circle closed and has been home to several restaurants since then including the Rock ‘n’ Roll Grill and, just recently, Good Neighbors, a fast food restaurant with a hodgepodge of a menu including chow mein, pizza, cheeseburgers and philly steak sandwiches.

This past week a new restaurant, the Red Onion, opened as Mountlake Terrace’s newest burger joint.

37_mThere are a few cosmetic things about the restaurant that aren’t quite finished but don’t let that deter you from stopping by. The restaurant was named after the owner’s favorite local community burger joint as a child, also called the Red Onion. The Red Onion has quite a variety of items on their menu. Of course there are burgers but they also have other BBQ sandwiches, some seafood, steaks, chowder and a variety of other sides. They even have an assorted selection of ice cream so it’s a good place to stop by on hot summer days. I finally got a chance to stop by today for lunch. I ordered a a burger that had A-1 steak sauce, bacon and peppercorns. My friend had the blue cheese burger. Both looked and tasted very good. Burgers are around $5 and for about $10 you can get a burger, side and a soda.

Even without a formal sign outside (just a sandwich board) the place was pretty full with an assortment of families, couple and teens. The Red Onion is a great addition to the Town Center neighborhood and will hopefully be around for quite a while.

The Red Onion is located at 23209 56th Ave W across from the Shell station.
