Terrace Hawks shut out Blanchet 28-0
In their third game of the season, the Hawks squared off with a non-conference game against Blanchet. After a disappointing performance last Friday against Shorecrest, the Hawks came out with something to prove.
The Hawks opened their first possession with a heavy barrage of Griffin Rash, who scored on a 6 yard touchdown. Rash finished the game with 76 yards rushing. The PAT was no good, leaving the score at 6-0.
The Hawks played without their top running back and defensive back Zack Karels due to an injury that has been lingering since the start of the season. However, the Hawks failed to get it done in the first half, failing to convert on 4th down on two consecutive drives (once on the
Blanchet 11 yard line and again on the Blanchet 38 yard line).
It was the play of the Hawks’ defense that kept Blanchet at bay with big sacks in the first half by Stafford Williams and two big interceptions by sophomore Mason Stone.
The half ended with the Hawks still up 6-0.
To start the third quarter, again, the play of the defense led the way with another big sack by Williams. However, the offense stalled once again in the red zone at the Blanchet 16 yard line.
It was not until early in the fourth quarter that the offense came alive after a big sack and fumble recovery by Jordan Iese that gave the Hawks new life. Freshman Devante Downs, who ran for 91 yards and two touchdowns, took advantage of the opportunity, striking on a 26 yard touchdown run igniting the home crowd and his team. Hunter Rook finished with a 2 point conversion giving the Hawks a 14-0 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the game.
The Hawks defense was fired up with another interception this time by Martinze Johnson. The Hawks offense started rolling again with Julian Snow carrying four Blanchet defenders to convert a first down, which led to a Rook to Mitch Haldane 23 yard touchdown pass. Downs followed up with his second TD scoring from the 4 yard line.
Finally, Mason Stone capped off a solid defensive performance by tying a school record with his 3rd interception of the game.
The Hawks (2-1) have a big inner-league match up against Meadowdale (2-1) next Friday at Edmonds Stadium.
