The Mountlake Terrace boys track team showed they will be a force to contend with at the state meet next week by winning the 3A District 1 Championships on Friday in Marysville. The Hawks topped the 10-team field with 107 points; Shorewood place second while Shorecrest grabbed third.

On the girls’ side, favorite Glacier Peak easily won the district title; Terrace finished fifth.

The Hawks qualified a number of athletes from both the boys and the girls squads for the 3A state track and field championships May 23-25 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma, including the boys 4×100 relay team of Quinnell Mason, Gifton Okoronkwo, Joshua Kim and Duane Dahl. The Hawks won the district title in the relay with a winning time of 42.85.

Mason, Kim and Dahl teamed up with Yohan Tewolde to place third in the 4×400 meter relay and qualify for state with a time of 3:28.14. Three of the four relay members are also going to the state meet in individual events, Mason in the 400 meters, Tewolde in the 800 meters and Dahl in the 300 meter hurdles. Dahl took the hurdles district title with a winning time almost one second faster than his closest competitor.

Hawk McKenna Hunt grabbed two hurdles district championships, winning both the 100 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles. She will be returning to state as a sophomore after going last year as a freshman.

Other state qualifiers from Terrace based upon their finishes at the district meet include Okoronkwo and Tye Esparza in the triple jump, Beau Kennedy in the javelin, Jack Pierce in the 3200 meters, Hailee Malins in the shot put, and Chinne Okoronkwo in the pole vault, the long jump and the triple jump. Both Malins and Okoronkwo are freshmen.

The three-day WIAA 2A, 3A, 4A State Track and Field Championships begin on Thursday, May 23, at 3:20 p.m. at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.
