In her quest to become a three-event champion at the 3A state track & field meet, Mountlake Terrace High School sophomore Chinne Okoronkwo came up three inches short.
Okoronkwo won the girls long jump on Friday at the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) state championships, then easily out-distanced the field to win the triple jump on Saturday. Her triple jump mark of 40 feet 11.25 inches was a new state meet record.
In the 3A girls pole vault, also held on Saturday, Okoronkwo cleared the bar at 12 feet, but had to settle for second place as Marissa Berry of Southridge High School was to only competitor to successful cleared 12-3.
With two first-place and one second-place finishes, Okoronkwo improved on her freshman debut at the state championships last year when she garnered a first place, a second place and a sixth place. This year she was responsible for 28 of the 51 total team points scored by the Terrace girls team at the state meet. MTHS girls finished third overall at state.
