While the Mountlake Terrace High School girls softball team returns 10 players from last year’s successful team, there is one significant addition to the squad for this season – a new head coach.
Shannon Rasmussen takes over the helm of a Hawk team that finished 15-9 and just one victory away from qualifying for the 3A state tournament in 2012. This is Rasmussen’s first head coaching position; she served as an assistant at Jackson High School previously.
With plenty of experience, pitching and hitting, Rasmussen sees the 2013 Hawks making another district appearance and a run at getting to state. “I think we have the team and the players to do that,” she emphasized.
Providing much of the experienced pitching for Terrace this year will be junior Maddy Kristjanson and senior Rene Bos. Kristjanson was an All-Wesco 3A South first team honoree last season for her overall play; Bos earned All-Wesco 3A South second team recognition for her pitching during the 2012 season.
Kristjanson is expected to play at shortstop this season as well, anchoring an infield deep with talent. “We’ve got a really solid infield,” Rasmussen said. “They’re pretty much all returners.” Bos will see plenty of time at first base, with junior Hannah Baisch at third base. Other Hawk infield standouts include sophomore Hannah Wilcox and senior Kelsey Watson.
“Kelsey was not on the team last year, but she is coming back,” explained Rasmussen. “Hopefully she’ll be a pretty solid hitter for us. She can also fill in for a couple infield spots when we need her.”
Terrace will start the season this week with two road games, at Lynnwood High School against the Royals on Tuesday, then at Marysville-Pilchuck to face the Tomahawks on Thursday. Both games begin at 4 p.m. The Hawks’ first home appearance will be March 18 when they face Edmonds-Woodway at Mountlake Terrace High School.
