Saturday was a great day for Boscoe, a 9-year-old dog, who had been patiently waiting for a new home at PAWS Companion Animal Shelter in Lynnwood.

A day earlier he had met some nice people and Saturday was the day Boscoe finally was sprung from the shelter as Dana Shaw, Leonard Shaw and Bill Hanna arrived to take him home.

Dana couldn’t quite explain why she chose Boscoe, but she knew she made the choice.

“He’s looks beautiful. He’s the one,” she said. “He’s got a beautiful face. He’s a sturdy boy.”

Boscoe is the third dog the Shaws have adopted. One was a stray and the other was from Old Dog Heaven.

The Shaws were looking for an older dog in the 5- to 8-year-old range. They like older dogs because they generally are calmer and less aggressive with other dogs, Dana said.

The adoption was the first time the Shaws have been to PAWS and the experience went smoothly during an especially hectic day because PAWS was taking part in the annual Pawsitive Alliance Open House, a state-wide event in which 24 shelters held special events for the public.

“It was wonderful,” Dana said of PAWS’ adoption process. “Everyone was helpful and thorough, even though it was a busy day.”

Saturday’s Open House helped PAWS kick off National Adopt A Shelter Dog Month.

PAWS is offering offering reduced adoption fees for all adult dogs, ages 7 and older. The fee is $50, which reduced from the normal $75 rate.

Those he’s not quite old enough for the special adoption, Winston, a 5-year-old Chihuahua mix, is looking for a home. He’s been with PAWS since late August.

Winston is described as a sidekick dog, who is a social butterfly. He does well with other small dogs.

For those not able to take on a pet full-time, PAWS still is need of Foster Homes for cats and dogs. No previous foster experience is necessary and training is provided. Call 425-787-2500, ext. 822 for more information or see paws.org/get-involved/foster/
