Monday night, the Mountlake Terrace City Council convened for the first time this year. The council had a little housekeeping to do, with swearing in of council members.
First up was Councilman Seaun Richards, sworn in by Mountlake Terrace City Attorney Greg Schrag.
Then Councilwoman Laura Sonmore took the oath.
Councilman Bryan Wahl was also sworn in.
The council voted to re-elect Mayor Jerry Smith for the 2016-2017 term. The vote was uncontested.
Council then elected Councilman Rick Ryan to be the new Mayor Pro Tem. Councilwoman Sonmore previously held the position. She has been on the city council for 15 years and has been Mayor Pro Tem since 2007.
“I respect the work she has done for our city and the board,” Councilman Ryan said. “I’m looking forward to backing up the mayor when I need to.”
Councilwoman Sonmore says she is looking forward to taking steps to build a new city hall in the coming year, and thanked the council for allowing her to be Mayor Pro Tem.
“I had to make a lot of tough decisions, and I still stand by them all,” she said.
Later, the council approved its allocation of lodging taxes. The city received $25,000 in lodging taxes last year. Tour de Terrace will receive the largest cut, at $17,815. Friends of the Arts will get $4,460 and the Snohomish County Tourism Bureau will get $2,725.
